How do I save a YouTube thumbnail?
A YouTube thumbnail grabber saves the cover image a creator chose for a video. YouTube does not offer a "save thumbnail" button, but every video has the same set of image files on YouTube's image servers. This tool finds the video ID in your link and shows all of them at once.
- Copy the video link. On a computer, copy it from the address bar. In the YouTube app, tap Share → Copy link.
- Paste it above and press Get thumbnails. Links from youtube.com/watch, youtu.be, Shorts, embeds and live replays all work. You can also paste the 11-character video ID on its own.
- Pick a size and press Download. The file is fetched through PinSaveHD so it saves as a real JPG with a clear name, instead of opening in a new tab.
Nothing is uploaded and you never sign in. Only public thumbnails are shown, the same images anyone sees on YouTube.
YouTube thumbnail sizes and dimensions
YouTube recommends custom thumbnails at 1280×720 pixels (16:9), at least 640 pixels wide, as JPG, PNG or GIF, and under 2 MB. From each upload it makes five standard copies. These are the sizes this thumbnail downloader can grab:
| Size name | Dimensions | Ratio | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Max resolution (maxresdefault) | 1280 × 720 | 16:9 | Only when the uploader sent an HD video or custom thumbnail |
| Standard (sddefault) | 640 × 480 | 4:3 | Letterboxed: black bars top and bottom |
| High quality (hqdefault) | 480 × 360 | 4:3 | Always available; letterboxed |
| Medium quality (mqdefault) | 320 × 180 | 16:9 | Always available; no bars |
| Default (default) | 120 × 90 | 4:3 | Tiny preview used in lists |
The 4:3 sizes (SD, HQ and Default) have black bars at the top and bottom, because a 16:9 frame is placed inside a 4:3 box. For a clean image, pick the max resolution or MQ size. Thumbnails checked 2 November 2026.
Turn a YouTube thumbnail into a Pin
Pinterest is a strong place to send people to your videos, but a 16:9 thumbnail looks small in a feed built for tall 2:3 images. Three quick ways to fix that:
- Open the Pin Creator, start a 1000×1500 design and drop the thumbnail in the top half, with your title in large text below.
- Use the Pin Image Resizer and choose Fit (blurred bg) to place the frame on a blurred 2:3 background in one click.
- For video Pins, make a cover with the Video Size & Cover Maker.
Check our Pinterest image size guide for every Pin format.
Tips for a sharper result
- Always try the max resolution size first; it is about 13 times more pixels than HQ.
- If a creator later changes the thumbnail, YouTube serves the new one under the same file name. Grab it again to get the latest version.
- For print or big screens, a thumbnail is still only 1280 pixels wide. Ask the creator for the original artwork if you need more.
- Keep the file name: it includes the video ID, so you can always find the video again.
What if it doesn’t work?
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| “Does not look like a YouTube link” | A playlist, channel or search link | Open the single video and copy its link |
| Only small sizes appear | No HD thumbnail exists for that video | Use SD (640×480) or MQ (320×180) |
| Images do not load | Private, removed or age-restricted video | Only public videos have public thumbnails |
| Download opens in a tab on iPhone | Safari previewed the image | Tap Share → Save Image or Save to Files |

Frequently asked questions
How do I get the thumbnail of a YouTube video?
Paste the video link into the YouTube thumbnail downloader and choose a size. The largest is 1280 × 720 if the creator uploaded a custom HD thumbnail.
How do I download a YouTube thumbnail?
Copy the video link from the address bar or the Share button, paste it into the box above and press Get thumbnails. Every available size appears with its own Download button. On a phone, the file goes to Downloads or Files.
What is the YouTube thumbnail size?
YouTube recommends uploading custom thumbnails at 1280×720 pixels, a 16:9 ratio, at least 640 pixels wide, under 2 MB, as JPG, PNG or GIF. The largest copy YouTube stores and serves is the 1280×720 max-resolution image.
Why is the max resolution thumbnail missing?
Some older or low-resolution uploads never got a 1280×720 thumbnail. In that case YouTube only stores the 640×480 SD and smaller sizes. The tool checks each size and marks the missing ones.
Does the thumbnail grabber work with YouTube Shorts?
Yes. Paste a youtube.com/shorts/ link. Shorts thumbnails are stored in the same sizes as normal videos, so you can still grab the HD frame.
Can I use a downloaded thumbnail on Pinterest?
Thumbnails belong to the video creator. Use them for your own videos, with permission, or for commentary where the law allows it. A good use is turning your own YouTube video thumbnail into a Pin that links people to it.
Is this YouTube thumbnail downloader free?
Yes. It is free, has no account or app to install, and works in any modern browser on iPhone, Android, Mac, Windows or Chromebook.
Is PinSaveHD part of YouTube or Pinterest?
No. PinSaveHD is an independent tool and is not affiliated with YouTube, Google or Pinterest.
