What Actually Happens When You Download a Pin With PinSaveHD

A plain-language walk through the lookup, the media list, the download proxy and what is (and is not) stored along the way.

TL;DR

When you paste a link, PinSaveHD reads the public pin page, lists the media files Pinterest serves with their real sizes, and streams your chosen file from Pinterest’s CDN to your device. No login is used, and no download history is kept.

We think you should know exactly what a tool does with the links you paste. Here is the whole journey of a download on PinSaveHD, step by step.

The page checks the link format in your browser first. If it is clearly not a Pinterest link, you see a message straight away and nothing is sent anywhere.

If the link is a pin.it short link, our server follows its redirects to find the full Pinterest address. The pin.it expander shows you this process openly.

3. The public pin page is read

The server requests the public pin page from Pinterest, the same page a logged-out visitor would see, and reads the media details inside it: video files, image sizes, Idea Pin pages and basic text such as the title. We do not log in, and we never ask for your password.

4. A media list comes back

Your browser receives a short list: each file's type, resolution and address on Pinterest's media servers. The result card shows this list so you can choose. We do not upscale, re-encode or relabel files.

5. The download

When you tap Download, the file comes from Pinterest's media servers through a small proxy. The proxy only accepts Pinterest media addresses and exists so that your browser saves the file with a sensible name instead of opening it in a new tab. The file passes through; it is not kept.

6. Browser-side extras

Board ZIPs, image format conversion, colour palettes, resizing and QR codes all happen inside your browser. Those files never touch our server.

What is not stored

  • We do not keep copies of downloaded media.
  • We do not build a history of your downloads tied to you.
  • There is no account, so there is no profile to attach anything to.

Like almost every website, the hosting platform may keep short-lived technical logs (for example to block abuse). The privacy policy explains this in full.

What this means in practice

Only public content can be fetched, because we see exactly what a logged-out visitor sees. If a pin is private, deleted or restricted, the tool cannot get it. That is a deliberate limit, not a bug.

Why the lookup sometimes fails

Pinterest occasionally serves a minimal page without media details, especially under heavy load. PinSaveHD retries once automatically. If Pinterest changes how its pages are built, lookups can fail until the reader is updated; the status page shows whether the service is currently working.

Open about limits

Heavy video processing, such as converting to MP3 or turning video into GIF, runs in your browser instead of on our server, with clear size limits. HLS stream merging is not offered.
