How Long Should a Pinterest Download Take? What Is Normal and What Is Not

Why most pins resolve in a couple of seconds, what makes some slower, and when a long wait means something is actually wrong.

TL;DR

Looking up a public pin usually takes one to a few seconds. The download itself depends on file size and your connection; a 720p video of a few megabytes is quick on normal mobile data. A wait of more than about 30 seconds usually means a network or link problem.

When you paste a link into PinSaveHD, two separate things happen. First the service looks up the pin and works out which files it contains. Then your browser downloads the file you choose. Each step has its own speed limits, and knowing which one is slow tells you what to do about it.

Step one: looking up the pin

The lookup asks Pinterest for the public pin page and reads the media information inside it. For an ordinary image or video pin this usually takes one to three seconds. A few things stretch it out:

  • Short links. A pin.it link has to be expanded first, which adds one extra request.
  • Idea Pins and carousels. Multi-page pins carry more data, so there is more to read.
  • Pinterest being busy. Sometimes Pinterest answers slowly or returns a bare page without media details. PinSaveHD retries once automatically before reporting a problem.
  • Boards and profiles. These require reading a feed of many pins, so expect several seconds rather than one or two.

Step two: the file download

Once the result card appears, the download speed depends on the file size and your connection. Images are usually small, often well under a megabyte. Video pins vary a lot: a short 720p clip may be a few megabytes, while a longer 1080p video can be tens of megabytes. On mobile data, or on a weak Wi-Fi signal, that difference is very noticeable.

The result card shows the resolution of each option before you tap it. If you are on a slow connection and only need the clip for reference, the smaller option will finish much sooner.

Board ZIP exports

The board downloader builds a ZIP file inside your browser. It fetches each image one after another and packs them locally, so a board with dozens of pins can take a minute or more. The progress counter tells you how far it has got. Keep the tab open until it finishes; closing it cancels the work because nothing is stored on our side.

When a wait is not normal

  • The spinner runs for more than about 30 seconds on a single pin.
  • You see an error saying no media was found for a pin that clearly has a video.
  • Every link fails, including ones that worked yesterday.

In those cases, check the status page first. If the service is up, try the pin again after a minute, then try a different pin. If a different pin works, the problem is with that particular pin: it may have been deleted, made private or restricted. Our troubleshooting guide walks through each error message.

Things that do not speed anything up

Pasting the same link repeatedly, refreshing during a board export, or opening several tabs at once does not make Pinterest respond faster. It can actually trigger rate limiting, which makes the next attempt slower. One paste, one wait, is the quickest route.

Quick summary

TaskTypical wait
Single image or video pin lookupAbout 1–3 seconds
pin.it short linkSlightly longer (one extra hop)
Idea Pin or carouselA few seconds
Board or profile listingSeveral seconds
Board ZIPDepends on number and size of pins

These are rough expectations from how the service works, not guarantees. Network conditions and Pinterest's own response times vary from minute to minute.
