TL;DR

A pin.it link is Pinterest’s short share link. It redirects to a full pinterest.com address for a pin, board or profile. Downloaders accept pin.it links directly. If one fails, open it in a browser and copy the full address it lands on.

When you copy a link in the Pinterest app, you usually get something like pin.it/AbC123x. It is short and easy to share, but it hides where it leads. Here is how these links work.

A short link is a small address that redirects to a longer one. When you open it, the pin.it server replies with a redirect pointing to the full Pinterest page, sometimes through an intermediate address with tracking parameters.

Why Pinterest uses them

  • They fit neatly into messages and posts.
  • They let Pinterest measure how shared links perform.
  • They work for pins, boards and profiles alike.

Paste it into the pin.it expander. It follows each redirect and shows you every hop, the final address and a clean version without tracking parameters. All PinSaveHD downloaders also expand short links automatically, so you can paste them directly.

Full Pinterest addresses can also carry tracking codes after a question mark. The link cleaner strips those so you share a tidy, private-friendly URL.

  • The pin was deleted, so the redirect leads nowhere useful.
  • The link was copied incompletely; short codes are case-sensitive.
  • The link points to a board or profile; use the matching tool.

Genuine pin.it links only redirect to Pinterest. Because a short link hides its destination, expanding one first is a sensible habit if it came from someone you do not know.

After expansion you typically see an address like pinterest.com/pin/123456789012345678/ followed by parameters such as ?invite_code=…&sender=…. The number is the pin ID, which is all that is needed to identify the pin. The parameters record who shared it and through which channel. Removing them does not change which pin opens.

pin.it links can also point to a board or a profile. After expansion, a board address looks like pinterest.com/username/board-name/ and a profile like pinterest.com/username/. Paste those into the board or profile downloader rather than the video downloader.

Sharing tips

  • For public posts, share the clean pin URL so readers can see where it goes.
  • For QR codes on print materials, the QR code maker works with either form, but clean links make denser codes less likely.
  • Keep the original short link if you rely on Pinterest's share statistics.

They are designed to keep working as long as the pin exists. If a pin is deleted or made private, the link still redirects, but the destination no longer shows the content.
