TL;DR

Pinterest serves videos as MP4 (H.264 or HEVC) or HLS streams, images as JPG, PNG or WebP, and animations as GIF or looping MP4. H.264 MP4 and JPG open everywhere. Convert WebP to JPG or PNG when an app will not open it.

Pinterest stores media in several formats, and the one you receive depends on what the creator uploaded and how Pinterest processed it. Understanding the formats explains most "why did I get this file?" questions.

Video: MP4 and HLS

Pinterest delivers video in two ways. HLS (files ending in .m3u8) is a streaming format: the video is split into many short segments and the player picks a quality as it plays. It is efficient for watching but awkward to save, because there is no single file. MP4 is a single, self-contained file that plays almost everywhere: phones, desktop players, editing apps and messaging apps.

When Pinterest exposes a direct MP4 for a pin, PinSaveHD lists it with its resolution. When a pin only has an HLS stream, we say so plainly. Converting HLS into a single MP4 needs a server-side video tool that this host does not run, so we do not offer it; we list the direct MP4 instead when one exists.

Images: JPG, PNG and WebP

  • JPG is the most common format for photos. It uses lossy compression, which keeps files small at the cost of a little detail.
  • PNG is lossless and supports transparency. It is common for graphics, screenshots and logos.
  • WebP is a modern format that is usually smaller than JPG at similar quality. Some older apps and editors still do not open it.

PinSaveHD requests the largest image Pinterest offers, often labelled originals in the address. If an app will not accept a WebP file, the media converter turns it into JPG or PNG right inside your browser, without uploading the image anywhere.

Animations: GIF versus video loops

Many pins that look like GIFs are actually short, silent MP4 videos set to loop. Pinterest does this because MP4 is far smaller than GIF for the same animation. If the original GIF file is still available, we label it GIF. If not, you get the MP4 loop, which most chat apps can play. See the GIF downloader for details.

Audio

Pinterest does not offer separate audio files. Pinterest to MP3 pulls the soundtrack out of a video and re-encodes it as MP3 inside your browser.

A note on quality labels

Converting a file never adds detail. Turning a 720p video into "1080p" just stretches it. PinSaveHD only shows the resolutions Pinterest actually provides, so the label on the button matches the file you get.

Checking a file's format after download

On a computer, the file extension tells you the format: .mp4, .jpg, .png, .webp or .gif. If extensions are hidden, turn them on in your file manager's view settings. On iPhone, the Files app shows the type under the file name; on Android, most file managers show it in the details panel. If an image named .jpg will not open, the file may actually be WebP with the wrong extension; re-saving it through the converter fixes that.

Why the same pin can give different formats

Pinterest may serve WebP to browsers that support it and JPG to others, and it processes video uploads into several renditions. That is why two people saving the same pin on different devices can occasionally end up with slightly different files. The underlying image is the same; only the packaging differs.
