TL;DR

Pinterest pin titles allow 100 characters, but only about the first 40 may show in feeds, so lead with the main keyword. Descriptions allow 800 characters and help Pinterest understand your pin. Write clearly for people first and avoid keyword stuffing.

Pinterest is a visual search engine, and text is how it understands what your image is about. Good copy helps your pin appear in search and in related-pin suggestions.

The limits

  • Title: up to 100 characters, but only the first 40 or so show in most feeds.
  • Description: up to 500 characters; the first 50–60 appear under the pin in some views.
  • Alt text: up to 500 characters, read by screen readers.

Our character counter checks all three while you type.

Put the main phrase first

Weak: “So yummy!! You have to try this 😍”. Better: “Easy one-pan lemon chicken – 30-minute weeknight dinner”.

Write for people, not just algorithms

Describe what the viewer will get: the result, the time it takes, who it is for. Two or three natural sentences beat a wall of keywords.

Hashtags

Pinterest no longer leans heavily on hashtags. A few specific tags at the end are harmless; a long list looks like spam.
